Renovation, Repair and Painting

Painting and renovation work can create very high levels of lead dust exposures if not done safely.

Federal law requires that workers who disturb painted surfaces in housing, schools and childcare facilities built before 1978 must attend an EPA certified one-day training in lead safe work practices and obtain EPA certification. In addition, the contracting firm must be certified by the EPA as a Lead Certified Renovation firm.

If you decide to hire a contractor to do any work that disturbs a pre-1978 surface including painting preparation work, repairs and remodeling, we highly recommend that you select a contractor that is EPA lead certified and who will use lead safe work practices. Ask questions about how they will contain the paint chips and dust, and be pro-active in monitoring their work. Lead Abatement Work

State law requires that anyone conducting a lead inspection, overseeing or doing work with the intent of permanently abating lead, have State Lead-in-Construction certification. You may find a list of state certified individuals on the State of California Department of Public Health Lead-in-Construction website.

Lead Testing

In California, anyone who performs lead evaluations (for compensation) must be certified by the California Department of Public Health. The State certifies individuals, not companies.
